The Writing of 'Cut Off From The Everyday World By Water'

The setting for this was an area in the Cotswolds on the banks of the River Avon. This place also inspired the title for my collection 'Frost Hollow' as the nearby Vale of Evesham is recognised as a frost hollow – a low lying 'pocket' where frost occurs more frequently than in surrounding locations. It is also the setting for my poem 'Above the Flood' in my collection 'Allotments in the Orbital.'

The background to this poem was the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in 2001 where over 10 million sheep and cattle were slaughtered in an attempt to deal with the crisis.
